The Eddie Aikau Essay was something we had to do in our humanities class. Ms. Pepitone introduced to us that in Hawaii there was a contest happening for students to participate and turn in their essays. This project is an example of Civic Literacy and Engagement as I was able to participate in a local event. This was a contest held by the Eddie Aikau Foundation. Every year they come up with a new prompt we all had to follow. We had to write about Eddies three life morals, love, restraint, and understanding. Then in the essay talk about how these morals shape our everyday personal lives. I'm proud of how I was able to look into Eddies life a little deeper and be able to connect with him even if I never met him. I ended up winning honorable mention with a $100 dollar prize. If I could improve I would've spent more time on it and not rushed it. This project was a great example of my growth in writing.
21st Century Skills Self Directional Skills- This skill was important because Ms. P gave us a lot of class time to work on the essay. We had to self direct and concentrate to get it done. Writing and coming up with ideas in a classroom filled with your friends can be hard which made me have to be on it and not get off track. Information Skills- I had to use information skills to research the life of Eddie Aikau. Going online and finding as many resources as possible. I searched for reliable stories that could include examples of love, restraint, and understanding. Communication Skills- Communication with my classmates was important. We had to peer edit our essays with a partner and communicate about what we think needed improvement. It was important to voice out what we thought so their essay could be better and I appreciated the feedback from another perspective. Civic Literacy and Engagement- This project we were all participating in this local contest. We're supporting the Eddie Aikau Foundation with something that they feel passionate about.
