Name: Honeycreeper Project Date: 3/29/2019 Subject: Biology Facilitator: Mrs. Wilson Description of Work: In class we were learning about adaptive radiation. Basically the concept of this project was "Imagine you, but a honey creeper". We had to write through the eyes of a species that has undergone adaptive radiation. The honey creeper is one of the most notable species that has gone through adaptive radiation. We started this project with writing three paragraphs and including an image of the animal we chose. I chose the Telespiza Ultima (also known as a Nihoa Finch), which is a type of honey creeper. Then we had to write two paragraphs and a phylogenic tree. The tree shows the Telespiza Ultima's ancestors and how it has evolved over time into new species. Then when we had our information we had to create a newsletter to present our work. I decided to make like a modern newspaper article. Which 21st Century Skills do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? Self directional Skills- I had to make sure I finished my paragraphs and use my time effectively when we would work in class. Information Skills - I had to do research to find out more about the life of my honey creeper. Also researching and understanding how my honey creeper has gone through adaptive radiation. Communication Skills - I had to present in front of the class and be able to explain the life of my bird from their eyes. I needed to be able to explain and prove to my teacher that I understood how my bird has gone through adaptive radiation. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? What I'm most proud of is how my newsletter turned out. I think it looks really pretty and aesthetically pleasing. I'm proud of how each of the pictures look and how they're organized. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment? How I improved my 21st century skills would be by working on my own which helped my self directional skills. What was most difficult about completing this task? What was the most difficult was making the newsletter. I spent a lot of time trying to get a good and organized format. I wanted to get the best photos and make sure they were organized well and really described how the Telespiza Ultima lives. How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different? How I could improve this work would be by spending more time on it so it could have been better formatted. I could have improved my phylogenic tree so it would've been better. How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? How this could relate to what I have learned in the past is by being able to explain what I've learned about adaptive radiation and evolution. I knew from last year about evolution so I understood how this bird was evolving into it's own kind. How can you apply this to future learning? How I could apply this to future learning is by now I know more about evolution and stages of adaptive radiation. If I ever want to know more about certain animals I know that they have changed a lot over tine and I could do more research. |
